James Ross has studied history and music at Oxford University, with a dissertation on opera in France of the Third Republic. He was a finalist in the contest Philharmonic direction of the BBC in 1998 and has led more than 850 works in 15 countries in Europe, North America and Asia, including a directory of major French works. These include scores of Berlioz, Bizet, Boieldieu, Boulez, Chabrier, Debussy, Dukas, Duruflé, Fauré, Gounod, Indy, Lalo, Milhaud, Poulenc, Ravel, Roussel, Saint-Saëns and Satie.
